Broad
haven
Broad Haven is a popular summer destination
within easy reach of Haverfordwest. Once a coal-mining village,
Broad Haven began to develop as a seaside resort (complete with
bathing machines) in Victorian times and is now a substantial
village with a choice of shops and eating places and ample parking.
The wide, sandy beach and safe bathing make
it ideal for families, and it is also popular with sea-anglers
and surfers. Flooded coal workings in the area have been turned
into a small nature reserve.
Little Haven
Little Haven is a picturesque fishing village
on a sheltered bay, with a small beach. However, it was once
the centre of a mining area. Anthracite from nearby workings
was exported on coasting vessels, which were loaded on the beach.
The bay nowadays shelters small pleasure craft and a few lobster
boats, and is popular with divers.
The village is squeezed into the valley at
the head of the inlet, and as the three access roads are steep
and narrow it can become congested with cars in the holiday
season. Parking at nearby Broad Haven and walking to Little
Haven is a popular alternative.
