Milford
Haven was founded in 1790 by Sir William Hamilton, and the town
has strong associations with Admiral Nelson. Early settlers included
Quaker whalers from Nantucket Island who supplied London with
oil for lamp-lighting. There was a regular boat service to Ireland
and a naval dockyard, though this was later moved to Pembroke
Dock.
The arrival of the railway in 1863 gave the
town new impetus, and a large docks complex was built. This
became home to the sixth largest fishing fleet in Britain and
the town prospered and grew. The decline of the fishing industry
in the 1950s was offset by the growth of the oil industry, with
several refineries being built along the Haven.
Milford Haven is still a working port and
a busy town. Part of the docks has been redeveloped to include
a marina.
