A
set of pinnacles that just break the surface near a tiny island
of the same name, 15 miles into the Irish Sea from St David's.
The aptly named island has a lighthouse on top. It was originally
a wooden structure, but a large wave back in the 19th century
put paid to that in one easy pounding. It Has now been replaced
with a sturdy granite structure.
Those who make it to the Smalls are treated
to an aquatic show. Extending from the surface down to 50m,
the rock faces form a collection of gullies and canyons that
are almost living entities.
Currents wash over the Smalls constantly, promoting growth of
high-energy species such as dahlia and jewel anemones that smother
the slick rock. In among them, crawfish and lobster proliferate.
